This is the opening gathering of We Believe: The Nicene Creed, a series of six gatherings held from September through April that explore the historic Christian faith confessed in the Nicene Creed. Each gathering focuses on a major portion of the Creed and why these truths still matter today.
Designed especially for college students and young adults, though everyone is welcome.
About the Teaching
Why Do Christians Need Creeds?
Why do Christians need creeds? Why did the early church believe it was necessary to clearly confess what Christians believe about God? Our opening teaching introduces the Nicene Creed and explores why the early church formulated and confessed it.
We will consider the relationship between Scripture and creeds, the importance of doctrinal clarity, and how creeds help guard the church from theological error.
Rather than viewing doctrine and confession as things that divide Christians, we want to consider how shared biblical confession actually gives Christian unity a foundation.
What You’ll Take Away
A Foundation for the Series
The Nicene Creed does not replace Scripture. Rather, it summarizes and confesses biblical truth. Christians have historically understood the importance of clearly articulating the faith once delivered to the saints and passing that faith on to the next generation.
This opening teaching will establish the foundation for the rest of the series.

Dr. Jonathan Master
President · Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Dr. Jonathan Master serves as president of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Greenville, South Carolina, and is a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America. He holds a PhD in theology from the University of Aberdeen, and before coming to Greenville he served in pastoral ministry in Maryland and Pennsylvania and as Dean of the School of Divinity at Cairn University. He is committed to the Reformed faith as confessed in the Westminster Standards and to training pastors for the church.
